Implementing Innovative Teaching Methods
Introducing the “Question-Based Learning (QBL)” Model for Educational Innovation in the
Age of Large-Scale AI
In the era known as the age of large-scale AI, the key talents are not those who excel at solving
problems handed to them, but those who can reconstruct existing knowledge to formulate
insightful questions that help solve real-world problems and use diverse resources to address
them. QBL is an educational model that promotes higher-level learning activities by encour-
aging learners to take the initiative to generate questions or bring up an issue, systematically
fostering critical thinking throughout the learning process. The introduction of QBL aims to shift
learners from being passive recipients of knowledge to becoming active explorers, establishing
a new Hanyang student profile that embraces integrative thinking and practical execution. QBL
focuses on developing future-oriented talents who will lead new changes, rather than merely
following external changes driven by advanced technologies, thereby embodying the value of
educational innovation that transcends the current era.
Developing and Operating UNESCO-Accredited Sustainable Development Education: “IC-PBL
(Industry-Coupled Problem/Project-Based Learning)” Courses
Hanyang University has developed and fully implemented IC-PBL courses across both under-
graduate and graduate programs, aimed at cultivating field-oriented talents with practical prob-
lem-solving skills. The key features of IC-PBL courses are as follows: First, the courses are centered
around problems or project topics proposed by actual companies or societal organizations, or
issues that need solving in real-world contexts. Second, learners take the lead in performing
creative and collaborative problem-solving activities. Third, the process and outcomes of the
learning activities are often mentored or evaluated by field experts. So far, major companies and
institutions such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Dyson, and SK Telecom have participat-
ed in Hanyang University’s IC-PBL courses. Hanyang’s “IC-PBL Connect & Share Project,” which
has accumulated years of IC-PBL course achievements, was officially accredited as a UNESCO
Sustainable Development Education Project and has been introduced as a representative Kore-
an case of sustainable development education to countries worldwide by 2025.
Implementing HY-LIVE ver. 3.0 Teaching Model
As the first in the world to utilize telepresence technology in university education, we offer
interactive classes in dual classrooms. To maximize the sense of presence, we are continuously
enhancing the learning environment. Beyond hologram-based teaching methods, we also in-
corporate VR-linked lab practices to further amplify educational effectiveness.

Innovation Research Impact

The core of research with future growth potential and sustainability lies in “convergence.” Hanyang
University is establishing various interdisciplinary research organizations to create synergy among
different fields of study. Additionally, the university is forming industry-academia collaboration
systems with numerous companies to develop a new research ecosystem.
Future Research: Securing Growth Drivers through Interdisciplinary Convergence
Hanyang University is establishing the MEB (Medicine·Engineering·Bio) Center, a medical convergence
center for interdisciplinary research in the fields of medicine, engineering, science, and pharmacy.
Through the MEB Center, which specializes in life sciences essential for the future, the university aims to
foster inter-departmental collaboration and interdisciplinary research, creating synergy through aca-
demic integration.
Creating a Sustainable Research Ecosystem:
The Fusion of Universities and Businesses
Hanyang University operates the IUCC (Industry-University Collaboration Center), a center focused on
long-term research projects that are challenging for companies to undertake on their own. Through
the membership-based IUCC, the university can concentrate on research and education with stable
financial support, while companies gain access to essential information and research outcomes.

Establishing Korea’s First University Volunteer Corps
In 1994, Hanyang established the Korea’s first university-based
volunteer corps, and in 2012, Hanyang launched the nation’s
first alumni volunteer corps. As such, Hanyang has nurtured in-
tellectuals who practice love in deeds, and not merely through
words.
A Love in Deed and Truth by All Hanyangians
In 1995, we adopted volunteer works as a school subject for the
first time among Koran universities. Accordingly, we launched
“Heemanghandae (Hanyang Volunteer Group)” where students
plan and manage volunteer activities themselves, creating
an environment where students can proactively practice love
through deeds.
Expanding the Scope of Activities to Social Innovation
In 2016, Hanyang launched the “University Social Innovation”
initiative, through which it reinterpreted “Love in Deed and
Truth” in a modern context. As part of these efforts, we estab-
lished the Social Innovation Center within the Volunteer Corps
in 2017. Thanks to such efforts, we have expanded the fields in
which we practice our love by leveraging the academic knowl-
edge and expertise we have gained in order to develop and
utilize solutions that fundamentally resolve various social issues.
In 2023, we formed the Global Social Innovation Group under
the direct supervision of the President of Hanyang, striving to
transmit to students the knowledge and experience necessary
to help resolve global social issues.

Change
Publishing the Global Social Innovation Journal
(SSIR) to Create Social Value and Strengthen Student
Competence
In 2018, Hanyang University and Stanford University signed an
exclusive agreement for the Korean edition of the Stanford So-
cial Innovation Review (SSIR), which made Hanyang serve as a
platform to disseminate global trends and the latest discourse
in Korea, while sharing Korea’s best practices abroad. Hanyang
students translate international articles and report domestic
case studies, thus contributing to the creation of social value at
Hanyang by accumulating field-oriented knowledge and expe-
rience.
Establishing a Technology-Based Social Innovation
Education Model in Collaboration with Kakao (a
Korean Tech Company)
Hanyang University partnered with the ‘Kakao Impact Founda-
tion’ in 2024 and is operating a course “Tech for Impact Cam-
pus” to spread “helpful technology” that realizes social value.
The course aims to provide practical education that combines
Hanyang’s social innovation capabilities with the technical ex-
pertise of professional developers of ‘Kakao’, enabling students
to directly apply idea to social issues through technological
solutions.
Planning and Operating In-depth ESG Extracurricular
Programs to Support Sustainable Development
Hanyang aims to cultivate creative social innovation talents
who can contribute to the creation of an ESG management cul-
ture and social development. To this end, Hanyang is planning
and operating the ‘Sustainable ESG Leadership Course 3.0’ pro-
gram which provides professional and practical ESG education.
Action
First University in East Asia to Join the Global Social
Innovation University Network, ASHOKA U
In 2018, Hanyang joined the ASHOKA U, a global network of
universities leading social innovation. Recognized for its contri-
butions to creating a better world—including its founding phi-
losophy of “Love in Deed and Truth,” social innovation curricula
encompassing bachelor, master, and doctoral courses, and
contributions to the local community— Hanyang became the
first ASHOKA U Changemaker Campus in East Asia.
In 2024, Hanyang became the only university in Asia to be
recertified for the ‘ASHOKA U’ following a strict evaluation.
This once again proves our social innovation achievements
and global-level educational capabilities, accumulated over
the past six years, being recognized internationally. As a result,
Hanyang is establishing itself, in name and reality, as a cradle
for nurturing changemakers and a hub for the global social
innovation network.
Launching the Nation’s First Major in Social Innovation
In 2018, Hanyang was the first university to launch the under-
graduate Major in Social Innovation. It offers a variety of cours-
es and extracurricular programs that provide students with the
knowledge and opportunities to contribute to solving social
issues through creative ideas.
The Festival of Changemakers, Seventeen Hearts
Festival
The ‘Seventeen Hearts Festival,’ which visualizes the 17 UN
SDGs into a heart shape, is a platform designed to foster
changemakers who are concerned about social issues and
have a sense of responsibility toward local communities, and
support the creation of social impact. In 2025, marking our
10th anniversary since our inception in 2016, we hosted an
event under the theme ‘From Changemakers to Futuremakers:
