What
How
In the ‘2017 Nature Index Innovation’, announced in September
by the Nature Publishing Group’ (NPG), also known as the Global
Science Publishing Group, Hanyang University ranked 1st in
the nation and 23rd in the world regarding the patent cited index
(Normalized Lens influence) category. The Normalized Lens
Influence Metric is an indicator that shows how one paper is used
in patents. This achievement can be interpreted that there is high
connection between Hanyang's high-quality research and the
commercialization of new products and services, as Hanyang's
founding principle 'Application of Knowledge' indicates.
The Nature Index Innovation calculates the citation index for each paper published by
each university from 1980 to 2015. According to this, Hanyang University published
25,633 papers during the period, citing 142,555 patents. The index of patent citation
per article is 5.56, which ranks 1st in the nation. This excellent result was achieved due
to Hanyang's continuous pursuit on practical academics and research.
The Nature Index 2017 Innovation ranked the top 200 research institutes(including
universities) who have contributed to global technological innovation by assessing
the impact of academic research and achievements of specific research institutes
on the development of practical technologies such as patents. The research
institution to be evaluated was selected at least once in the top 100 in the world
by the 2015 Nature Index, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University(上海交通) evaluation,
the Thomson Reuters Most Innovative Universities evaluation, and the 2015/2016
Leiden Ranking.

Therefore, it reduces the burden of examinees and helps them to prepare for
admission.
Admission Counseling Cafe
The Admission Counseling Café, which was held for two days from August 11 to

than 20 admissions faculties have counseled 1,000 examinees who had been
preselected.

A control room and a server room of Hanyang Cloud system
67
The first university to install the Cloud System
‘Cloud’ means a computing system which uses internet technology to provide IT
resources as its service. ‘Cloud’ is a computer program that allows users to borrow
IT resources as much as a user wants but must pay for the amount that the user
has used. Its advantage is that the University, as a user, doesn’t need to buy all the
gears and devices. The Hanyang Cloud Center has installed a private cloud system
coping with companies as HPE, CISCO reaching industry-university cooperation. It
provides an intellective form of service by combining the 3 academic wings under
Hanyang which are the Hanyang Seoul Campus, the ERICA Campus, and the
Women’s University.
Challenge leads to progress
After installing this system, Hanyang has solved the course registration problem
which has been a struggle for a long time. Hanyang has received positive feedback
saying it has reached a great leap in efficiency in its academic system. Since virtual
space can contain more data compared to offline, there has been a great decrease
in the amount of offline system source and has led us to an efficient management
of resources. Human resource, time, and assets that we have saved in this process
can now be invested to other parts such as academic duties heading to the
innovation in methodology of education that activates Smart Learning.
First in Korea is now proceeding to the world
The installment of this new system is regarded as a chance to once again recognize
Hanyang’s competence and capability in IT. After Hanyang’s success in installing
the Cloud System, there are many universities in Korea benchmarking Hanyang.
The Cloud System is a rare case, not only in Korea, but also in the world, and it
seems that Hanyang is taking a great leap beyond Korea to the open world.
How
What
In 2008, Hanyang University aimed to be a top 100 global university.
To pursue this goal, Hanyang had set the ‘New Hanyang 2020’
master plan as its strategic assignment. IT and informatization have
changed the world, and to adapt this new era, a bold decision was
made by Hanyang to surpass other universities. The Hanyang Cloud
Center is part of this plan of a 2020 roadmap, and Hanyang is the
first university to install the cloud system in a university.
