category in the ‘National Evaluation for Higher Education Institutions.’
On August 23, 2018, both the Seoul and ERICA campuses were included in the ‘Superb’
category in the ‘National Evaluation for Higher Education Institutions.’
The National Evaluation for Higher Education Institutions aims to strengthen the quality
of university education and implement a quota cut due to the decrease in the school-age
population. In the past 3 years, Hanyang has been included in the ‘Superb’ category by being
evaluated for its △education conditions and soundness of university operation, △operation of
classes and curriculum, △student support and △quantitative and qualitative indicators related
to basic factors such as education performance. Thus, Hanyang will receive financial support

R.PBL of the Seoul Campus
R. PBL was launched the second semester of 2018 and is a project-centered-education
curriculum created at Hanyang University. The three main concepts focused upon are Real
World context, Research Based, and Reflective Thinking. Students in the program work on
real-life projects in society, and thus they are able to experience firsthand, actual scenarios
they are likely to face in their lives before graduation. Through these enlightening, unique
experiences students are expected to improve their problem solving abilities by suggesting
realistic solutions.
IC-PBL of the ERICA Campus
Starting from 2016, IC-PBL (Industry-Coupled Problem-Based Learning) has been used as an
innovative model at ERICA in which students work to provide solutions to practical problems
that occur in the field. Problems are presented to students based on collaboration among
the industry, local community, and Hanyang University. This model has shown to be very
effective whereby the number of courses has increased 4 to 139 in only 2 years. IC-PBl can
be divided into four categories based on two criteria which are ‘whether the problem was
presented from the field' and 'whether field has to be involved in the solution’.

Blackboard is a learning space where instructors and learners can
communicate, share information, and collaborate online, beyond the
physical and temporal constraints of the classroom environment. The
biggest changes that Blackboard will bring are as follows.
Sharing information and various kinds of knowledge,
allowing users to freely communicate and have discussions
Various kinds of knowledge and information for PBL teaching and learning can be freely
shared. In addition, different types of communication can be used among learners and
teachers. For instance, the ‘Course Room’ program is built-in allowing for real-time video
classes, so students can have discussions in group video chats in real time.
Customized learning activities for individual learners
The teacher can provide appropriate feedback for learners’ progress, level, and requirements
since the teacher can understand the learning situation of learners in real time through the
functions of course contents, calendars, discussions, and messages on Blackboard.
Increasing the chances of development by sharing learning cases
Blackboard contains a history of students’ learning goals, learning processes, and learning
results which are stored in real time. This history can be used as a teaching portfolio for
teachers and a learning portfolio for learners. Because this information is accumulated and
shared, teaching and learning can be further developed.
Introducing HY-Live Course
HY-Live course, Hanyang’s another innovation, is a remote lecture system that combines ‘Telepresence
technology’, which is a solution allowing for remote and virtual meetings. As a result, courses can be
conducted in real time at different locations. Hanyang seeks to improve curriculum concentration in the
classroom through innovative class management. In addition, the curriculum is organized so that courses
through HY-Live can be actively conducted by utilizing experienced TAs (Teaching Assistants) assigned to
each classroom, and field experts from the Industry Advisory Board (IAB).

Seniors demonstrate love for students
30 years their juniors
On September 13, 2018, a special lunch was served at the
Amphitheater of Seoul campus, hosted by a group of the
alumni of the classes of ’85 to ’87 to show warm feelings
toward their juniors. The event was attended by 1,100
students from the classes of ’15 to ’17. Through this event, the
students and alumni, with a 30-year gap between them, were
able to communicate and interact with each other.
Kim Hyun-chul (Inorganic Material Engineering, ’93), the
chairman of the reunion of the class of ’86, said that he has
been preparing for the class of ’85 reunion for 3 years, and
was happy to have been able to host three alumni meetings
this year. He also said that “sharing meals brings people
together as a family,” and that he “prepared these events in
the hopes that the juniors and seniors would become as close
as family members.”

The class of ‘85’s reunion became a ‘Genie,’
for helping students fulfill their dreams
The ‘Dream Scholarship Selection Project,’ which has been hosted by the Scholarship
Planning Committee from the reunion of the class of ’85 since 2016, is not a simple scholarship
reception ceremony. The scholarship is not awarded to those with superior grades or
economic hardships; rather, the committee selects the finalists by choosing those applicants
with the most well-defined dreams and plans. This project aims to continuously support
students’ dreams. The mentor relationship with their seniors brings enthusiasm to the
juniors. The group plans to raise a total of 100 million won, sending 25 million won a year
for four years. “It is an experience that is much more valuable than money. Rather than just
accepting a scholarship, I would like you to think of it as a senior who is sharing experiences
with you. In addition, I hope that various forms of creative scholarship culture will spread to
other alumni reunions as well,” said the class of ’85.
The class of ’87 donates
the ’87 Study Room
In September 2017, a gathering of the class of
’87 raised funds through the Class of ’87 Student
Homecoming Day, and on October 31, 2018,
they opened the ‘87 Study Room. The ’87 Study
Room was built in a remodeled space of 679m²
in Reading Rooms 1 and 2 on the first basement
level of Paiknam Academic Library. It took
two months and an investment of about 300 million won. The reading room was designed
for students’ convenience, and includes amenities such as bright lights, large desks, and a
windowed lounge area.
Meanwhile, the alumni held a year-end event in December and contributed 100 million
won to the 80th anniversary of its foundation. In addition, KS Asset Group’s vice chairman
(Mechanical Engineering, ’87) donated 10 million won to the scholarship fund, and Han
Kyu-soo (Physics, ’87), a chairman of Philoptics, donated 30 million won for the Sipsi-Ilban
Scholarship for students of the Department of Physics.

national World Cup team, and later a head coach of a K-League
soccer team. Park became the head coach of the Vietnamese
national soccer team in 2017. His leadership helped them earn the
runner-up position in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Championship earlier this year.
He also led the team to the semifinals for the first time in Vietnamese soccer history in the
Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang in 2018. Park, who is praised as ‘Vietnam’s hero,’ recently
said in an interview with News H, “Live a life of challenge with pride as Hanyangians. You can

work experiences as the first Minister of the Office for Government Policy Coordination as
a budget specialist and economic officer. In addition, he has the ability to coordinate the
economy as a whole, and is thus the best person to be in charge of the control tower of the
economy in the current situation where economic vitality should be stimulated through

words ‘god’ and ‘Ottogi,’ because Ottogi is thought of as such a
good company. At the center of the company is its president Ham
Yeong-joon. Ham received the Gold Tower Order of Industrial
Service Merit at the 42nd National Productivity Conference in
October 2018. He was highly praised for his contribution to productivity, including an energy
savings of 11 percent and for achieving an average sales growth rate of 6.4 percent over 17

First of all, L.A.C Studio is in charge of domestic marketing for the Asia
Pacific Youth Exchange (APYE), a global social innovation exchange
program that targets young people in the Asia Pacific region. L.A.C Studio
will earn profits through its program marketing, but it will also provide
field practice opportunities to undergraduates from the department of
social innovation. Students who participate in field practice courses will be
able to develop marketing and program design skills.
Lastly, L.A.C Studio works with small businesses in the local community
of Seongdong-gu to produce and sell school souvenirs. Souvenirs that were
showcased and sold at the 3rd Seventeen Hearts Festival were the first items
produced by the L.A.C Studio. This gave the small local companies an
opportunity to increase their sales, while also providing Hanyang clothing
and textile majors and design majors with helpful learning experiences.
L.A.C Studio is a good model for a university in two ways. First, students
can practice what they have learned in their majors in actual business
to create real profits. Second, the profits made from the business can be
reinvested in education.

Hanyang University founded the Volunteer Corps in 1984, making it the
first university in Korea to create a community service organization. Upon
its founding, Hanyang made volunteering mandatory for all students.
Every Hanyang student must earn one credit through Hanyang Social
Volunteering in order to meet graduation requirements. Additionally,
students can participate in various student activities and programs such as
the Hanyang Hope Leader Group, the Social Economy Leader course, and
the Social Innovation Capstone Design course.
Hanyang University was invited to the 50th annual meeting of the Asian
Development Bank, which was held in May 2017 in Yokohama, Japan.
President Lee Young-moo spoke in front of global leaders and announced
the ‘HUGE Initiative.’ HUGE stands for Hanyang University for Global
Engagement, and consists of three major components: networking,
training, and funding. It is Hanyang University’s blueprint, which aims to
make the world better through the concept of social innovation. Through
the HUGE Initiative, Hanyang University will let students with innovative
ideas network with one another, train them, and help them turn their ideas
into actual projects through funding.
In 2017, Hanyang University revised its regulations to create a bachelor’s
program for Social Innovation majors. Starting in the spring of 2018, over
20 students are selected each semester to take courses to satisfy the new
major’s requirements. Those that meet the graduation requirements will
be the first undergraduates in Korea to earn a bachelor’s degree in Social
Innovation. Additionally, the Graduate School of International Studies will
create graduate programs for Global Social Economy Studies and recruit
students starting in the fall semester of 2019. These will mark the very
first integrated social innovation education program in Korea. Lastly, in
November 2018, Hanyang University signed an agreement with SK Group
with the goal of fostering Changemakers, through which a successful
model of partnership between a university and a corporation was achieved.
