Hanyang University celebrated its 80th anniversary since its establishment
in 1939. The slogan ‘The Best for a Better World’ was chosen to reaffirm
its meaning and value. Also, various celebratory events such as the
commemoration ceremony, the outdoor opera, and the mega-exhibition,
‘Hanyang 80, Infinite Growth,’ were held to honor this special year.
Furthermore, ERICA campus has celebrated its 40th anniversary since its
establishment in 1979.
The 80th anniversary celebration was flourishly
held at the Olympic Gymnasium on May
15. The commemoration was enriched with
shared discussions of the university’s new
vision outlined for the future, along with
congratulatory messages from domestic and
international VIPs, guest lectures and other
celebratory performances.
The special exhibition introduced ‘Hanyang
80, Infinite Growth’, where it showed various
topics on how Hanyang paved its way for the
past 80 years. This was held for 80 days starting
from May 13 at the University Museum, with
numerous visitors from inside and outside of
the university.
The 40th anniversary ceremony of ERICA
campus was held on September 27 at Lion’s
Hall. ERICA proclaimed that in 10 years, their
journey to becoming an innovative campus
will be achieved by fulfilling the vision to
partner with more than 500 businesses.

of the
New President
02
Professor Kim Woo-seung, who worked steadily for the development of the university, was
inaugurated as the 15th president of Hanyang University. President Kim Woo-seung revealed
his strong ambitions to “lay a strong foundation to make a new leap forward to continue
Hanyang University’s tradition” during his inauguration speech. Also, he emphasized to “achieve
education·research·industry-university cooperation innovation which corresponds to Hanyang’s
tradition of practical learning to strengthen the global competitiveness of the university”.
08
President Kim Woo-seung had carried out an important role in establishing the
ERICA campus as the core of South Korea’s university-industry cooperation.
As he is the number one expert in university-industry cooperation who has
received the Red Stripes Order of Service Merit in 2011 for the deed of
providing the university-industry cooperation campus model, President Kim
Woo-seung’s inauguration is expected to be a chance for Hanyang University
to cooperate with businesses to create stronger ties and promote sustainable
growth with one another.
President Kim Woo-seung announced the ‘HYU 2020 Medium-Term Development Plan’ in
September 2019, which reflects the existing university development strategies.

Hanyang Industry-University Collaboration Center (I.U.C.C.)
Hanyang Industry-University Collaboration Center (I.U.C.C.)
mainly conducts long-term research projects that are difficult
for companies to manage. The research is done collaboratively
with professors through the process of receiving a membership
fee from the companies, and finally sharing the results with the
related companies. Companies that participate in I.U.C.C. with
a paid membership can receive various benefits, such as access
to research papers and reports regarding research outcomes,
employee training, and more.

departments already in existence related to big data amongst domestic
universities, Hanyang University is the first to combine psychology,
big data, and AI. The quota of students for the two departments is set at 20
each and will gradually increase. The Department of Data Sciences will first
recruit freshmen for 2020, while the Department of Cognitive Sciences will
recruit from 2021.
The practical use of data is increasing exponentially in most fields, such as in manufacturing and
service, as information technology (IT) evolves. In particular, the convergence of information and
communication technology based on the Internet of Things (IoT) is increasing the demand for
analyzing large-scale data in real-time as well as creating economic profits through it. Faced with the
era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Hanyang University will establish the School of Intelligence
and recruit 20 talented students for the Department of Data Sciences, regardless of their high school
concentration (liberal arts or natural sciences). The Department of Data Sciences will operate a
curriculum that integrates academic studies such as data, AI, the brain, and psychology. In addition,
for students wishing to obtain a doctorate degree in a short period of time, a combined degree
program that offers a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree will be organized (bachelor’s degree:
3.5 years + master’s degree: 1.5 years + doctoral degree: 2 years = a total of 7 years)
ERICA,
First admission of
the Contractual
Studies
In 2018, the ERICA Campus was chosen as the ‘Leading
university for promoting contract departments for early
employment’ by the Ministry of Education and the Korea
Institute of Industrial Technology. As a result, a total of 150
students passed the 2020 special admission for contract
departments for early employment. In 2019, there was
no application limit for the contract departments as it
was categorized as a special admissions system. However,
from 2020, following the ‘University Admissions Selection
Basic Data,’ the special admissions system for the contract
departments is now included in the category of early
admission (susi-track) with a maximum of up to six times.

Professor Sun Yang-kook has been conducting research on lithium-ion battery, a battery that is used
as the storage source for mobile electronic devices and electric vehicles for more than 20 years. His
primary focus of research is the lithium-ion battery cathode material. Professor Sun emphasizes that,
through researching the material, he can develop batteries that are more economical and possess
a greater capacity, which would eventually advance the commercialization of electric vehicles by
reducing its manufacturing cost. After developing the ‘core-shell’ type of cathode material with a
concentration gradient for the first time in 2005, he has since developed a fourth generation of
the concentration gradient cathode material as a byproduct of 10 years of research. He has also
successfully commercialized the material by applying it to Niro EV, a vehicle that was released by Kia
Motors in 2018. His continuous research regarding the battery cathode material has led to the result
of 599 SCI level papers and 456 national and international patents (as of 2019). Professor Sun was
selected by the National Research Foundation of Korea as one of the ‘17 Scientists Close to the Nobel
Prize’ in 2019 and was also selected as a scholarly member of The Electrochemical Society in the U.S.

On November 20, 2019, Clarivate Analytics, a global academic information company,
announced a total of 6,216 researchers (including a repeated selection from two or
more categories) from 60 countries around the world in 21 categories, through a
report named the ‘Global Highly Cited Researchers (HCR).’ The announcement is
made annually, reaching its 6th year as of 2019. There are 45 Koreans registered on
the list. From Hanyang University, Professor Sun Yang-kook, from the Department
of Energy Engineering, and Professor Kim Ki-hyun, from the Department of Civil
and Environmental Engineering, were listed, making it the first time that Hanyang
University has had two researchers in the top 1% of the world at the same time.
Professor Kim Ki-hyun developed a new material regarding the improvement of the environment
analysis system, which is used to control and manage odor-causing substances and Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOC) that are highly explosive. Materials such as benzene and formaldehyde are
the two types of VOCs and are first-class carcinogen created from activities in our daily lives, from
driving, smoking, cooking, and more. Nearly all current air cleaning technologies only specialize
in dust removal, which limits the detection and removal of these carcinogens. In response to this
limitation, Professor Kim developed the Metal-organic framework (MOF), which combines metal and
carbon organics, and successfully absorbed and removed these toxic substances. Additionally, he
also created a heat desorption-based pre-treatment technology to effectively concentrate samples
like these toxic substances, while also presenting the new method to diagnose the air quality
through analyzing 22 odor-causing substances at the same time, which were specified by the
Ministry of Environment.
Professor Kim has also been selected as a ‘National Erudite Scholar’ for establishing an analysis
system for harmful heavy materials within the atmosphere. The system developed by Professor Kim
can be utilized in various areas of interest, such as the sick building syndrome (SBS), the harmful
materials in electronic cigarettes, vehicle odor diagnoses, and more. His analysis system is widely
used throughout many fields and areas of interest, in research laboratories, and at industrial sites.

Heritage Site
The Old Administration Building was built out of stone. Late Professor
Park Hak-jae designed an L-shaped, three-story building. The entryway on the
second floor, facing the International Building, was used as the main entrance.
1956
After a fire broke out at the Old Administration Building in 1963, an extension was
added to the current four-story, shaped Old Administration Building. The late
Professor Jang Gi-in (Department of Architectural Engineering), the designer of
the extension and renovation, emphasized the symbolism of the university’s main
building by introducing designs in a neoclassical style. Professor Jang finished the
outer wall with stones and built a colonnade at the central part of the building to
complete the current appearance of the Old Administration Building.
1965
The Old Administration Building was vacated due to the opening of the New
Administration Building that subsequently took over all administrative duties.2009

The Old Administration Building of Hanyang University Seoul campus was
registered No. 751 of the Registered Cultural Properties on May 7, 2019.
Registered cultural properties are cultural assets designated and managed by the
Cultural Heritage Administration in recognition of their value in preservation.
Recognizing its unique architectural style and the historic characteristics of
Hanyang that have cultivated a lot of core industrial talents,
the Cultural Heritage Administration designated the Old Administration Building
as a Registered Cultural Property.

Community
The First Seongdong Hanyang Coexistence Dormitory, which reduces students’ housing fees by half,
began its test operation on May 2, 2019, when 21 units were provided in the first six months alone.
The average market price of studio apartment rentals near Hanyang University is 500,000 won
monthly with a 10 million won initial deposit. Firstly, in order to decrease the monthly rent, the initial
deposits were increased to 30 million won through negotiation with the landlords, and the increased
deposits were loaned to the students by the Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH). By utilizing this
funding, the LH can lend students 29 million won with 1% annual interest. The loan interest is then
paid for by Hanyang University and Seongdong-gu. Hanyang University and Seongdong-gu each
provides 75,000 won, totaling 150,000 won in scholarships, which allows students to live near the
campus for a deposit of only one million won and just 250,000 won monthly rent.

Is there any way to reduce students’ burden when looking for housing?
This was the start of Korea’s first Coexistence Dormitory,
which Hanyang University created with the Seongdong District Office
and the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH). It opened a path
towards coexistence through the participation of not only institutions
but also the local landlords.
Half-priced brokerage support service
Seongdong-gu, in cooperation with local residents, LH, and the
university, carries out a service that allows Hanyang University
and Hanyang Women’s University students to pay just 50% of the
brokerage fee when they sign a housing contract. This will bring
about an estimated 210 million won in savings for students annually.
123 district mediation offices are currently participating.

When alumni visit their alma mater after a long time, they say that the
campus is different from when they were students. That is because the
ever-changing and improving campus impresses them. In 2019, new
spaces were created through large and small construction projects, and
many inconveniences were improved. In particular, Hanyang University is
working to create a better educational environment through the installation
of IC-PBL classrooms.
