Hanyangians Shining Brightly
amidst Crisis
Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hanyang University’s professors, students,
and alumni have gathered together with research, technology development,
and warm donations to overcome the crisis.
Overcome COVID-19
Alumni Kim Jin-yong (Graduate School of Public Health, freshmen) firstly devised
and proposed the “Drive-through inspection method”, which is a portable inspection
method for COVID-19 vehicles. Alumnus Kim, the head of the Infectious Disease
Department at the Incheon Metropolitan City Medical Center, is also the one who
cured the 1st patient of COVID-19. Based on the suggestion of alumnus Kim, drive-
through screening clinics were established all over Korea. Major international media
such as CNN and BBC also took note of this, and many countries around the world
have adopted the drive-through testing method.
Alumni Kim Jin-yong
Professor Park Jeong-won of the Department of Voice and three disciples participated
in the “Veranda Music Concert” organized by the Seongdong-gu Office and
Seongdong Cultural Foundation for Seongdong-gu residents who were practicing
social distancing on March 23. Professor Park and his students performed a
30-minute performance with beautiful singing, soothing the weary of the residents.
Professor Park Jeong-won
Professor Kang Bo-seung
College of Medicine Professor Kang Bo-seung was in charge of patients diagnosis in
front of the emergency room of Hanyang University Guri Hospital at the very start of the
COVID-19 pandemic in February 2020. Professor Kang diagnosed a patient who visited the
hospital with symptoms of fever after coming back from Singapore as a suspected patient
and treated it in a negative pressure isolation room. The patient was diagnosed with
COVID-19 a few days later. At the time, when no other than direct Chinese visitors were
classified as suspicious patients, Professor Kang’s wise judgment prevented mass infection.

Together with Hanyang - Social Innovation Center
On April 9th, Hanyang University Alumni Volunteer Corps “Together with Hanyang”
and the Social Innovation Center delivered relief products such as refrigerators, medical
masks, hand sanitizers, meals and snacks to the Seongdong-gu screening center to
overcome COVID-19. The delivered goods were also used in other screening centers in
the region, such as the Seongdong-gu Office Public Health Center.
Student Kim Ji-hoo received attention by designing and distributing a dataset that
is useful in COVID-19 analysis. The dataset is a collection of stored data so that the
computer can understand it. He collected information scattered on the Disease Control
Center and local government websites, and reprocessed the information in a form
suitable for analysis and modeling. His dataset was distributed to Kaggle (a statistical
prediction model contest platform) and GitHub, respectively, and was ranked as the
most popular data within a week of registration within Kaggle.
Student Kim Ji-hoo
On March 18, Professor Jung Jae-yoon of the
Department of Organic and Nano Systems
Engineering distributed antibacterial rinse
products developed for industrial use and
exported to students free of charge in front
of the school cafeteria. Prof. Jung’s sharing
was quickly exhausted from the beginning
and added warmth.
Professor Jung Jae-yoon
Four students in the Department of Policy Studies started a voluntary fundraising
activity on March 1 through “Every Time” (university student community app).
Starting with them, a total of 1,080 people participated in the donation. The donation
of about 22 million won collected in this way was delivered to various philanthropic
organizations. ERICA Campus honorary ambassadors “Love Hanyang” also raised
about 2.3 million won for COVID-19 and sent it to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster
Relief Association. The Hanyang University cheer squad “RHooters” also donated 1.6
million won worth of hand sanitizers to the university’s members.

Hanyang’s
Contactless Events
2020 has been a more difficult year to host events than ever.
Hanyang University held major events in strict compliance with quarantine regulations
to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
“Untact” Campus Culture
On the occasion of the 81st anniversary on May 15th, a ceremony was held at the Seoul Paiknam Music Hall. Though
it is a foundation-level event with a large number of participants, only a permitted number of individuals were
allowed to attend this year to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and the event program was also simplified. Although
it was a downscaled event, all attendees added meaning by participating in the “Thanks to Challenge” with a heart of
gratitude and support to the medical staff who work tirelessly to overcome COVID-19.

photo zones were placed throughout the campus.
In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the ERICA
Campus 2019 graduation ceremony was broadcast
live online through the ERICA YouTube channel with
only a minimum number of participants. During the
ceremony, a special congratulatory video featuring
professors, staff, alumni, and current students, as well
as a special congratulatory performance by the ERICA
professor’s junior choir, etc., lit up the event.
On November 3rd, the “2020 Industry-Academic
Cooperation U&I DAY” was held at the ERICA campus
guesthouse. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, this
event was held simultaneously in an on-touch method
using Zoom and YouTube.
On November 25, ERICA Campus held the “2020 ERICA

and Sun Yang-guk Selected as the World’s
Top 1% Researchers in 2020
On November 18, the 6,167 of the world’s top 1% Highly Cited Researchers (HCR) in research papers,
were announced. Professor Kim Ki-hyun of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,
Professor Baek Woon-Gyu and Sun Yang-guk* of the Department of Energy Engineering, were the
Hanyang representatives who made it onto the prestigious list. The HCR, run by a global information
analysis service company Clarivate Analytics, is selected annually within 21 categories; 1 cross-field,
and 22 fields for researchers around the world. This year, a total of 46 Korean researchers were
included, including overlapping by field.
World’s Top 1% Researchers
Professor Kim Ki-Hyun was named HCR in the field
of “Environment and Ecology” and was selected as
the second one after last year. Professor Kim’s main
research area is the development of technology to
remove air pollutants.
Professor Kim improved the environmental analysis
system that controls and manages volatile organic
compounds (VOC) and odors and developed new
materials. In addition, he succeeded in adsorbing and
removing harmful substances by developing Metal
Organic Frameworks (MOF) that combine metals
and carbon organic substances. He also developed a
technology to effectively concentrate samples such as
harmful substances, and proposed a new air quality
diagnosis method that simultaneously analyzes 22 types
of odorous substances designated by the Ministry of
Environment. Prof. Kim was also selected as a “National
Great Scholar” for his achievements in establishing an
analysis system for hazardous heavy metal substances in
the atmosphere.

research and put his name in the “Coss-Field” sector.
Professor Paik’s major research fields are Energy Materials,
Nano Patterning, and Nano Devices Fabrication. Professor
Baek’s research team gained attention by conducting
research on enhancing the efficiency of the ‘sodium-ion
battery.’ To stop the volume expansion of the sodium-
ion battery and increase the saving space, Professor
Baek developed the method to use an “Sb@C coaxial
nanotube,” a carbon layer coated to the empty tube-
shaped nano stick. Meanwhile, Professor Paik has served
as the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy for about a
year since July of 2017.
Professor Sun Yang-guk, who was selected as the fifth
HCR this year, has received multiple awards in two fields,
“chemistry” and “materials science”. Last July with the
joint research team, Professor Sun presented a review
paper on lithium-oxygen batteries, one of the next
generation secondary battery systems, and introduced
the structure, driving principle, and related derivative
systems of the lithium-oxygen battery. In addition,
key problems related to lithium-oxygen batteries, the
latest research trends, and improvement directions in
consideration of practicality were presented. The title
of his paper “Lithium–Oxygen Batteries and Related
Systems: Potential, Status, and Future” was selected
as the cover paper for the online edition of “Chemical
Reviews” on July 22nd. Professor Sun was not only
selected as the 2019 Electrochemical Society (ECS)
