2023 HANYANG PRIDE | Patent/Technology Transfer

HYU & LG Chem make the largest tech transfer among domestic universities
Hanyang University (HYU) signed a technology transfer contract that is worth tens of billions of won (KRW)
with LG Chem related to secondary battery technology in March 2022. Considering that the total amount
of domestic university’s technology transfer is only around KRW 100 billion a year, this is a revolutionary,
unprecedented event ─ in that a single university made a tens of billions of won scale technology transfer
contract.
The transfer included about 40 patents in new high-nickel (nickel content of more than 80%) cathode
technologies from Hanyang University’s Energy Storage & Conversion Materials Laboratory through
which LG Chem will be strengthening its technological competitiveness in secondary battery materials.
Commercialization of the patents is expected to increase the driving distance of electric vehicles by 20~30%,
while decreasing the risk of explosion and combustion associated with high-nickel content.
Cathode materials, which account for about 40% of battery production costs, are key components that
determine battery capacity and life cycle. They are classified as one of the four major battery materials along
with anode materials, separators, and electrolytes. LG Chem intends to expand secondary battery sales from
KRW 1.7 trillion of last year to KRW 21 trillion by 2030 and increase its operating profit margin by double digits.
In addition to this technology transfer, HYU and LG Chem agreed to conduct joint R&D and support industry-
university cooperation scholarship students.

Completion of next-generation comprehensive security system
Hanyang University completed the establishment of a next-generation comprehensive security system that
will ensure campus safety in partnership with KT Telecop. This drastic improvement was achieved within 14
years since Hanyang University first introduced an unmanned security system in 2008. A new security room has
the main control center and information desk in a space more than twice the size of the previous room. With
the renovation of the old security room into the Campus Security Smart Room 2.0, the system is now all ready
to handle various kinds of emergency situations.
One side of the wall in the main control center has a multiview display system, about 8.5m wide and 2.8m tall.
It is the largest comprehensive monitoring system installed in a university in Korea. The system has enabled
real-time monitoring of various security and safety issues, including detection of fire and hazardous materials,
parking violations, etc., as well as flame detection in dangerous areas.
Campus Security Smart Room 2.0 improves online reporting system
Hanyang University took a step further by launching Campus Security Smart Room 2.0, which drastically
improved from simple reporting of the previous system. Upon receipt of a report or civil complaint, the nearest
staff is assigned to take an onsite “one-stop” inspection. Borrowing ideas from the National Safety Report, the
system also allows users to check the progress of complaints or inquiries in real time.

From November 26 to 27, 2022, when the 2023 Early Admissions Essay Writing Exam was conducted, Hanyang
University Seoul Campus implemented control measures, such as vehicle and access control, to ensure smooth
operation of the exam and prevention of safety accidents. As a result, the event ended without any major
congestion, accident, or casualties.
Hanyang University made great efforts to analyze traffic flows and the risk of accidents, based on last year’s
data, and made improvements in planning for this year’s event. Taking lessons learned from accidents that
resulted in a large number of casualties, preparations were made from the preliminary stage to ensure safer
and more efficient control of pedestrian flows.
As a result, congestion on the roads in the vicinity of the campus was noticeably reduced, and students were
able to safely disembark at the designated drop-off zone. Temporary crowding situations were relieved in a

Meal-sharing event returns after 3 years
The Faculty Alumni Association held an event (“Love Juniors, Love Students, Share Warm Meals”) at both
campuses from December 13 to 14, 2022 to provide a warm meal to alumni and students. The event was held
for the first time in three years since it was suspended due to COVID-19.
On December 13, bangyetang (half-portion chicken ginseng soup with rice porridge) was served to 300
students at the student cafeteria on the ERICA Campus, followed by a raffle. On the next day, December 14,

Newly updated Hanyang University student ID card.
The student ID card is an essential item for students on campus. It was reborn
with a new design for the first time after eight years. In addition to the simple
and sophisticated design, the color scheme clearly shows the identity of Hanyang.
What is particularly noteworthy is that this design came from students.

2023 HANYANG PRIDE | Student ID Renewal

Born again from the hands of students, the main users of university
Students from the Department of Applied Arts participated in the redesigning of the new student ID. Through
an IC-PBL (Industry-Coupled Problem-Based Learning) class, a creative convergence talent development
education model, through which learners solve real-life problems in the field utilizing mutual connections
among the school, industry, and the local community, students came up with three design proposals. From
March 28 to April 3, 2022, about 5,300 undergraduate and graduate students participated in a poll for selecting
the best design. After much discussion, the final winner was selected by the HYU Design Management Center
of Hanyang University, Shinhan Card and Shinhan Bank.
Simpler and more convenient student IDs
The new student ID card received positive feedback regarding meeting the students’ needs. According to a
survey conducted in early 2022, the biggest reason for dissatisfaction with the previous student ID card was the
risk of private information exposure. As the front side displayed the student’s photo and personal information,
many students experienced inconvenience when using it as a debit card or transit card. In addition, the old
design was outdated and did not reflect the university’s identity.
The new student ID card reflects all the elements desired by many students; the front side was changed to
a simple design that displays the identity of Hanyang University. Student’s personal information is also now
located on the reverse side of the card.
How to get a new student ID
Application to get a new student ID can be
made on the HY-in Portal. Changing to a
new card is available free of charge; a fee of
KRW 3,000 is incurred for replacement due
to loss, or change of photo. After applying
for reissuance, all students, except for those
applying for a replacement due to loss, can
visit the Student Support Team to return
the existing student ID and receive a new
one.
The front of the card is designed to show the university identity,
while the reverse side contains student’s personal information and
photo to avoid exposure of private information.

Campus-wide festival returns after three years and restores excitement after a
long wait
Spring festival, which was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resumed after three years. The festival
was held over a period of three days from May 25 to 27, simultaneously at both Seoul and ERICA Campuses.
Students’ enthusiasm, laughter and cheers filled the campus.
“Leap” was the theme of this year’s spring festival on the Seoul Campus, also known as “Rachios.” The theme

possibilities.
The theme of the spring festival of the ERICA Campus was “Action.” Its meaning was bringing life to everyday
life that had been interrupted due to COVID-19. With the hope that “our movement will start again on campus
and a lively university life will unfold in the future,” various events took place to draw student participation,
including performances, startup promotion flea market, and night market.
