New Renewable Energy Dormitory
Achieving carbon neutrality through greenhouse gas emission reduction and
cost-effective energy conservation measures
Hanyang University’s Seoul Campus Student Residence Hall 5, designated for first-year classes, stands at 12 stories high and
accommodates a large number of residents, resulting in substantial energy consumption. To address this, the university’s
dormitory has integrated geothermal energy for 48% of its heating needs, ensuring a stable heating supply while maximizing
cost savings. Geothermal energy harnesses the thermal energy from underground soil and groundwater for buildings’ cooling
and heating purposes. Installed beneath Student Residence Hall 5 completed in 2017, 48 pipes extend approximately 250 meters
underground, providing consistent underground heat energy throughout the year. Geothermal energy accounts for 48% of the
building’s total energy demand, surpassing initial investment costs and yielding significant energy cost savings.
This initiative not only achieves cost efficiency but also contributes to advancing toward creating a carbon-neutral city by
generating and utilizing energy within buildings. Renewable energy sources like geothermal energy maintain their supply even
with continuous use and emit significantly less greenhouse gases.
Following the successful introduction of geothermal heat and solar power in Student Residence Hall 5, the school increased
its utilization of geothermal energy in the ongoing construction of the 6th and 7th Student Residence Halls. While the use of

Hanyang Alumni Reunion in Shanghai:
Alumni Association Transcending Borders
China sends the largest number of international students to Korea. After completing their studies,
many Chinese students return to their respective hometowns, making it challenging to reconnect
with them. Hanyang University, however, took the initiative to establish the first alumni association in
Korea for Chinese international students, thus strengthening the bonds among Hanyang alumni.

President Lee Ki-jeong added,
“I aspire for Hanyang alumni to foster connections beyond borders, commencing with the East China Alumni Association.”
On September 7, the inaugural meeting of the Hanyang University International Alumni Association (East China) was held at
the Hilton Hotel in Shanghai, China. The gathering welcomed 107 Chinese alumni and eight Korean alumni residing in the East
China region. A photo exhibition showcased images capturing the experiences of Chinese alumni during their studies at Hanyang
University. Furthermore, Hanyang University presented a promotional space for the “International Building Lounge” at the Seoul
campus, funded by donations from international student alumni, along with an SNS photo wall, evoking nostalgia for their alma
mater and alumni pride. At the inaugural general meeting, Jin Yi, a graduate from the Department of Biomedical Sciences with a
master’s degree, and currently Executive Director at GwinThinkTank, was elected as the first chair of the alumni association.
For the past 20 years, Hanyang University has been at the forefront of university internationalization efforts since declaring
2003 as the “Inaugural Internationalization Year.” In 2004, it became the first Korean university to establish a local branch,
the Hanyang University Shanghai Center, in Shanghai. For nearly two decades, this center has been instrumental in
executing the university’s global strategy within the local context. It provides support for internships, employment, and
entrepreneurial programs aimed at assisting Chinese international students who have graduated from Hanyang University
to successfully integrate into Chinese society. Looking ahead, Hanyang University aims to expand its alumni network in
countries with significant numbers of international student alumni, beginning with China and extending to Malaysia,
Vietnam, Japan, and other nations.

Rebirth of Hanyang’s Mascots:
HYlion and HYnari
Hanyang University’s mascots, HYlion and HYnari, underwent transformations four years after their
introduction in 2019, enhancing their identity and narrative to align with current trends. These
characters, widely recognized both within and outside the university, are anticipated to play a more
prominent role in communication efforts following their 2023 renewal.

About HYlion design
It symbolizes the final

inviting playful hops and skips.
Evolving HYlion
Maintaining distinctive traits with enhanced appearance
The legend of the lion statue, aspiring to be a friend and mentor to Hanyang’s people, intertwines with the yellow blossoming
forsythia on Haengdangsan Mountain. The renewal has enriched the narrative behind the Hanyang University’s mascots.
Initially introduced in 2009, HYlion 1.0, the official mascot of Hanyang University, is a fusion of “HY,” the English abbreviation
for Hanyang University, and “Lion,” symbolizing strength and pride. It evolved into HYlion 2.0 with a sub-character HYnari in
2019, featuring a friendlier and simplified design to align with contemporary trends. Named by combining “HY” and “Nari,” the
Korean word for forsythia, a flower symbolizing Hanyang University’s spirit, HYnari embodies the shape and color of forsythia.
Positioned atop HYlion’s head, rather than on the ground, HYnari represents elevated aspirations. The two characters underwent
another transformation in 2023, adopting gentler and softer designs while enhancing their narratives and personalities to align
with contemporary trends.
Revamped designs align with their evolving storylines and current trends. Various motions and facial expressions were
incorporated to allow versatile applications. This reactivation resulted in compelling and engaging content, utilized for both
internal and external communication at Hanyang University, including branding activities and merchandise.

An intricate cultural endeavor intertwining architecture, dance, and music
Hanyang University Museum, with support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the National Museum Cultural
Foundation, has organized an official program for the 2023 Museum and Art Gallery Week. With the overarching theme of
“Museum, Sustainability, and Well-being,” the museum undertook the project, “Pavilion of Healing – Built with Wood, Grown
with Trees.” Designed by Professor Kim Jae-kyung from Hanyang University’s Department of Architecture, the Pavilion of Healing
resembles traditional East Asian wooden architecture. It was installed at the Yeolrin Songhyeon Square in Seoul’s Songhyeon-
dong from May 3 to 14, featuring various events including dance performances and concerts. The opening event at Yeolrin
Songhyeon Square featured a conversation with Professor Kim Jae-kyung and a performance titled “People Meet Nature,”
choreographed by Professor Seo Yeon-soo from Hanyang University’s Department of Dance. Furthermore, a string quartet
concert performed by Philstring, comprising alumni from Hanyang College of Music, took place. A range of activities, such as
crafting wooden bookmarks, were offered. Additionally, a dedicated photo zone and rest area provided a tranquil space, with the
Pavilion of Healing serving as the picturesque backdrop.
Subsequently, the Pavilion of Healing was relocated to the lawn in front of Hanyang University’s HIT and displayed alongside the
museum’s special exhibition from May 19 to June 22. The pavilion hosted a talk concert by Professor Kim Jae-kyung, a “Visiting
